The Girl With No Shadow by Joanne Harris
|
Seeking stability for her two children, Vianne
Rocher has suppressed her magical powers since last seen in the
much-acclaimed Chocolat. With Anouk now a preteen and Rosette a
special-needs preschooler, she has her hands full as she manages What else?
a chocolaterie in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris. But the Halloween
winds blow in Zozie, an identity-robbing witch disguised as a charismatic
helpmate. Zozie ingratiates herself into this little family, stealthily
planning her next diabolical theft, scheduled for Christmas Eve. As autumn
flows by, the two women transform the drab shop's confections into something
so delectable the pages practically ooze chocolate. Then Roux shows up after
four years troubled by the changes in his former lover's lifestyle and by
this newcomer. His appearance revitalizes Vianne and forces her to address
what is happening in her household and to reclaim her own unique magic
touch. The race against time gives the story intensity, and the three female
characters come alive with Harris's trademark shifting narrations. Although
it's a bit darker than Chocolat, readers will drink up this pleasurable tale
of love. Highly recommended for all popular fiction collections. Expect high
demand. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 12/07.] Teresa L. Jacobsen, Solano Cty. Lib.,

The Whole Truth by David Baldacci
Usually a sophisticated plotter, bestseller Baldacci (Absolute Power) offers a
story line and villain on a par with an average James Bond film in what's billed
as his first international thriller. Nicholas Creel, the head of the Ares
Corporation, a huge defense contractor, hires a perception management firm to
start a second cold war by planting fake news stories on the Internet about
Russian atrocities. The propaganda campaign soon turns violent with the massacre
of the members of a London think tank, the Phoenix Group, apparently by a
Russian hit team. Creel hopes that the Phoenix Group's links with the Chinese
government will lead to war between Russia and China as well as feed a worldwide
arms race that will profit his company. A shadowy operative, A Shaw, whose fiance
perished in the London attack, allies himself with a disgraced female journalist
in an effort to thwart Creel's evil plot. While some readers may find it a
stretch that a resurgent Russia should so easily overshadow all other world
crises, Baldacci in an author's note makes an eloquent case for the very real
threat of perception management. (Apr. 22) Copyright Reed Business

Hold Tight by Harlan Coben
Parents will find this compulsive page-turner from Edgar-winner Coben
(The Woods) particularly unnerving. A sadistic killer is at play in
suburban Glen Rock, N.J., outside New York City, but somehow he's less
frightening than the more mundane problems that send ordinary lives into
chaos. How do you weigh a child's privacy against a parent's right to
know? How do you differentiate normal teenage rebelliousness from
out-of-control behavior? When and how do you intervene if suicidal signs
appear? Other issues include single parenting; career versus family;
marital honesty; and how much information you should share with a child
at what age. Coben plucks each of these strings like a virtuoso as Mike
and Tia Baye try to deal with the increasing withdrawal of their
16-year-old son, Adam, after a friend's suicide. A pair of brutal,
seemingly senseless killings, punctuate the unfolding domestic troubles
that ratchet up the tension and engulf the Baye family, their friends
and neighbors in a web of increasing tragedy. The this could be me
factor lends poignancy to the thrills and chills. (Apr.) Copyright
