Summer 2008
Director's
Report
"It
was a splendid summer morning and it seemed as if nothing could go wrong."
-
John Cheever
Summer is a splendid time of the year at the Library -
exciting themed reading programs with prizes, fun programs for all ages,
flowers blooming, grass to be mowed, children at the Library all day long.
Some people may not agree that the last statement is a good thing or not -
children at the Library all day long - however it is reality. When the sun
becomes too hot, the Library is a nice place to cool off, see friends, and
explore the world of books and technology.
The Perry Public Library works to provide materials and
programs to encourage children to visit, and hope that they find the library
to be a warm and inviting place. Through their visits, we hope that
children will develop a lifelong love of books, reading and libraries.
Library staff works to ensure the safety of children in the
library however, they are unable to supervise each individually at the
library. For the safety of both the children and other patrons, the library
has requested that all children age eight (8) and under be accompanied at
all times by an adult.
When school is out for the summer, we see many more children
over the age of eight (8) come to the Library by themselves. Parents should
review some safety rules with their children prior to an unsupervised
library visit:
-
· Make
sure your child knows phone numbers of where parents can be contacted in
case of an emergency.
-
· Remind
children of appropriate behavior for the library.
-
· Establish
internet use guidelines for your child. They should not be giving
strangers personal information via the internet. On the website,
www.missingkids.com, there is a link to the brochure “Child Safety on the
Information Highway.” It is filled with good information to help parents
and children safeguard themselves on the internet.
-
· Review
rules regarding strangers.
-
· Know
the hours that the library is open and do not leave children here before
opening or after closing.
-
· Let
your children know that if they should ever feel uncomfortable or
uncertain with another patron in the library, they should tell a staff
member immediately.
Patron safety is very important to the staff and Board of the
Perry Public Library. We do our best to ensure patron safety; we appreciate
the patrons doing their part. Yes, summer mornings can be splendid, and we
do not want to see anything go wrong.
