Beehive                                                                                        Five Little Fireflies  (count on fingers)

Here is a beehive           (make a fist)                              One little firefly shines very bright

But where are the bees   (shrug shoulders)                       Two little fireflies show their lights

Hiding inside where nobody sees  (point to fist)                 Three little fireflies glimmer and glow

Soon they’ll come out                                                     Four little fireflies watch them go!

Of their hive                                                                   Five little fireflies fly in the night

1,2,3,4,5           (open fingers one at a time)                     Blink! Blink! Blink! Blink!  (open and close fingers)

1,2, 3                                                                            Creeping, creeping little flea, up my leg and past my knee

There’s a bug on me!  (pretend to knock it off)                   To my tummy, on he goes, past my chin and to my nose

Where did it go?            (look around)                             Now he’s creeping down my chin, to my tummy once again

I don’t know!      (shrug shoulders)                                   Down my leg, and pat my knee, to my toe that little flea!

                                                                                    GOTCHA!  (tickle toes)

Activities to do at home:

Colorful  Butterflies:   Say the rhyme and color the butterflies

The first to come to the garden bed

Is a lovely butterfly of brilliant RED

Then in comes another and that makes two

Fly right in my friend of BLUE

“The garden is fine, the best I’ve seen”

Says the butterfly of softest GREEN

Our garden needs a sunny fellow

Fly in butterfly with wings of YELLOW

Little friend of PURPLE, fly in too

The garden is waiting for a color like you

ORANGE, orange you’ve waited so long

Fly right in where you belong

Butterflies, butterflies, you’re such a sight

Flying together – what a delight!

BUG ZOO
Let your children use their imaginations to create their own make-believe bugs. Set out such materials as empty yogurt and mayo tubs, cardboard tubes, egg cartons, pipe cleaners, yarn, pompoms, googly eyes, paper scraps, paint (mixed with drops of liquid soap), and glue. Then invite the children to use the materials to make "bugs." Display their creations together as a Bug Zoo.

BUG LOTTO
Purchase two identical sets of nine different bug stickers. For a gameboard, divide a piece of poster board into nine squares and attach one bug sticker to each square. For game cards, cut out nine identical squares of poster board and attach the second set of bug stickers. To play, invite your children to take turns placing the bug cards on top of the matching bug squares on the gameboard.

BUG SAFARI
Go with your children on a walk to search for bugs. Take along plastic magnifying glasses and an instant camera. Have the children look for bugs under leaves, small pieces of wood, or rocks, and encourage them to talk about any bugs they find. Instead of bringing back the bugs, "capture" them by taking instant photos to view and discuss when you return.

LADYBUG ART      Let your children make ladybugs, using one of these ideas.

Paint walnut shell halves red. When dry, add spots with black markers.

Use tempera to paint round, smooth rocks red. Allow to dry, then glue on dots punched out of black paper for spots.

Brush the backs of small paper plates with red paint. Use black markers to add spots when the paint has dried.

 LADYBUG FINGER PUPPETS
Give your children 1-inch paper ovals or circles. Let them decorate their ovals with red and black markers to make ladybugs. Help them glue their ladybugs onto paper strips cut to fit around a finger. When the glue has dried, fasten the ends of each child's paper strip together to make a ring for wearing the ladybug puppet.

LIVE LADYBUGS

Ladybugs are prized by gardeners because they feed on unwanted insect pests, such as aphids. The little bugs are so popular that people often buy them to set free in their gardens. Ask at a local nursery if there is an outlet for ladybugs in your area, or check online references for live ladybugs. Then purchase an order of ladybugs for your family. When the bugs arrive, let the children help set them free in your garden and observe what happens.

LADYBUG SNACKS        Try one of these snack ideas with your famlily

Spread red jam on biscuit rounds and top with raisin "spots."

Decorate round cookies with red frosting. For spots, add chocolate chips.
