1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

On behalf of the 1,000 Books Foundation, Perry Public Library invites you to participate in this free reading incentive program which encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before they start kindergarten. The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. Reading with your child will prepare them for school by boosting early literacy, building vocabulary, and fostering a lifelong love of reading - all of which are key predictors of academic success.

Instructions

  • Stop by the library and register in the Children's Department.
  • Once your child or children are registered, you will begin tracking their progress through reading logs - just color in circles as you read each book.
  • Your child is required to complete 10 reading logs, each with 100 circles.
  • When a reading log is complete, you can bring it into the library for your child to receive a progress sticker and new log so they can continue reading. There will be a bulletin board in the Children’s Department with your child’s name on it to track their progress.
  • When your child completes the program, they will be given a new book and a picture of them can be taken for our bulletin board!
